ABSTRACT

The European Centre of Disease Prevention & Control's analytical statistics show that the new corona virus (Covid-19) is rapidly spreading amongst millions of people & causing the deaths of thousands of them. Despite the daily increase in cases, there are still a finite quantity of Covid-19 test kits available. The use of an automatic recognition system is crucial for the diagnosis and control of Covid-19. Three important Inception-ResNetV2, InceptionV3, & ResNet50 models of convolutional neural networks are utilized to detect the Corona Virus in lung X-ray radiography. The ResNet50 version has the best result & accuracy rate of the present system. As compared to the current models, a novel procedures and ensuring on the CNN model delivers better specific, sensitivities, and precision. By using confusion matrix and ROC assessment, fivefold validation data is utilized to analyze the current models and compare them to the proposed system. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Acute lower respiratory infection is a leading cause of death in developing countries. Hence, progress has been made for early detection and treatment. There is still a need for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, particularly in resource-limited settings. Chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) have the potential to serve as effective screening tools for lower respiratory infections, but the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in these areas is limited. To address this gap, we present a computer-aided diagnostic system for chest X-ray and CT images of several common pulmonary diseases, including COVID-19, viral pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung opacity, and various types of carcinoma. The proposed system depends on super-resolution (SR) techniques to enhance image details. Deep learning (DL) techniques are used for both SR reconstruction and classification, with the InceptionResNetv2 model used as a feature extractor in conjunction with a multi-class support vector machine (MCSVM) classifier. In this paper, we compare the proposed model performance to those of other classification models, such as Resnet101 and Inceptionv3, and evaluate the effectiveness of using both softmax and MCSVM classifiers. The proposed system was tested on three publicly available datasets of CT and X-ray images and it achieved a classification accuracy of 98.028% using a combination of SR and InceptionResNetv2. Overall, our system has the potential to serve as a valuable screening tool for lower respiratory disorders and assist clinicians in interpreting chest X-ray and CT images. In resource-limited settings, it can also provide a valuable diagnostic support.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a group of infectious diseases caused by related viruses called coronaviruses. In humans, the seriousness of infection caused by a coronavirus in the respiratory tract can vary from mild to lethal. A serious illness can be developed in old people and those with underlying medical problems like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and chronic respiratory disease. For the diagnosis of coronavirus disease, due to the growing number of cases, a limited number of test kits for COVID-19 are available in the hospitals. Hence, it is important to implement an automated system as an immediate alternative diagnostic option to pause the spread of COVID-19 in the population. OBJECTIVE: This paper proposes a deep learning model for the classification of coronavirus infected patient detection using chest X-ray radiographs. METHODS: A fully connected convolutional neural network model is developed to classify healthy and diseased X-ray radiographs. The proposed neural network model consists of seven convolutional layers with the rectified linear unit, softmax (last layer) activation functions, and max-pooling layers which were trained using the publicly available COVID-19 dataset. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: For validation of the proposed model, the publicly available chest X-ray radiograph dataset consisting of COVID-19 and normal patient's images were used. Considering the performance of the results that are evaluated based on various evaluation metrics such as precision, recall, MSE, RMSE and accuracy, it is seen that the accuracy of the proposed CNN model is 98.07%.

ABSTRACT

The novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019) has become a global pandemic and affected almost all aspects of our daily life. The total number of positive COVID-2019 cases has exponentially increased in the last few months due to the easy transmissibility of the virus. It can be detected using the nucleic acid test or the antibodies blood test which are not always available and take several hours to get the results. Therefore, researchers proposed computer-aided diagnosis systems using the state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques to learn imaging biomarkers from chest computed tomography and X-ray radiographs to effectively diagnose COVID-19. However, previous methods either adopted transfer learning from a pre-trained model on natural images or were trained on limited datasets. Either cases may lead to accuracy deficiency or overfitting. In addition, feature space suffers from noise and outliers when collecting X-ray images from multiple datasets. In this paper, we overcome the previous limitations by firstly collecting a large-scale X-ray dataset from multiple resources. Our dataset includes 11,312 images collected from 10 different data repositories. To alleviate the effect of the noise, we suppress it in the feature space of our new dataset. Secondly, we introduce a supervision mechanism and combine it with the VGG-16 network to consider the differences between the COVID-19 and healthy cases in the feature space. Thirdly, we propose a multi-site (center) COVID-19 graph convolutional network (GCN) that exploits dataset information, the status of training samples, and initial scores to effectively classify the disease status. Extensive experiments using different convolutional neural network-based methods with and without the supervision mechanism and different classifiers are performed. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed supervision mechanism in all models and superior performance with the proposed GCN.

ABSTRACT

This article is mainly concerned with COVID-19 diagnosis from X-ray images. The number of cases infected with COVID-19 is increasing daily, and there is a limitation in the number of test kits needed in hospitals. Therefore, there is an imperative need to implement an efficient automatic diagnosis system to alleviate COVID-19 spreading among people. This article presents a discussion of the utilization of convolutional neural network (CNN) models with different learning strategies for automatic COVID-19 diagnosis. First, we consider the CNN-based transfer learning approach for automatic diagnosis of COVID-19 from X-ray images with different training and testing ratios. Different pre-trained deep learning models in addition to a transfer learning model are considered and compared for the task of COVID-19 detection from X-ray images. Confusion matrices of these studied models are presented and analyzed. Considering the performance results obtained, ResNet models (ResNet18, ResNet50, and ResNet101) provide the highest classification accuracy on the two considered datasets with different training and testing ratios, namely 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, and 50/50. The accuracies obtained using the first dataset with 70/30 training and testing ratio are 97.67%, 98.81%, and 100% for ResNet18, ResNet50, and ResNet101, respectively. For the second dataset, the reported accuracies are 99%, 99.12%, and 99.29% for ResNet18, ResNet50, and ResNet101, respectively. The second approach is the training of a proposed CNN model from scratch. The results confirm that training of the CNN from scratch can lead to the identification of the signs of COVID-19 disease.

ABSTRACT

The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), with a starting point in China, has spread rapidly among people living in other countries and is approaching approximately 101,917,147 cases worldwide according to the statistics of World Health Organization. There are a limited number of COVID-19 test kits available in hospitals due to the increasing cases daily. Therefore, it is necessary to implement an automatic detection system as a quick alternative diagnosis option to prevent COVID-19 spreading among people. In this study, five pre-trained convolutional neural network-based models (ResNet50, ResNet101, ResNet152, InceptionV3 and Inception-ResNetV2) have been proposed for the detection of coronavirus pneumonia-infected patient using chest X-ray radiographs. We have implemented three different binary classifications with four classes (COVID-19, normal (healthy), viral pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia) by using five-fold cross-validation. Considering the performance results obtained, it has been seen that the pre-trained ResNet50 model provides the highest classification performance (96.1% accuracy for Dataset-1, 99.5% accuracy for Dataset-2 and 99.7% accuracy for Dataset-3) among other four used models.

ABSTRACT

The lethal novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting the health of the global population severely, and a huge number of people may have to be screened in the future. There is a need for effective and reliable systems that perform automatic detection and mass screening of COVID-19 as a quick alternative diagnostic option to control its spread. A robust deep learning-based system is proposed to detect the COVID-19 using chest X-ray images. Infected patient's chest X-ray images reveal numerous opacities (denser, confluent, and more profuse) in comparison to healthy lungs images which are used by a deep learning algorithm to generate a model to facilitate an accurate diagnostics for multi-class classification (COVID vs. normal vs. bacterial pneumonia vs. viral pneumonia) and binary classification (COVID-19 vs. non-COVID). COVID-19 positive images have been used for training and model performance assessment from several hospitals of India and also from countries like Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Israel, Italy, Korea, Spain, Taiwan, USA, and Vietnam. The data were divided into training, validation and test sets. The average test accuracy of 97.11 ± 2.71% was achieved for multi-class (COVID vs. normal vs. pneumonia) and 99.81% for binary classification (COVID-19 vs. non-COVID). The proposed model performs rapid disease detection in 0.137 s per image in a system equipped with a GPU and can reduce the workload of radiologists by classifying thousands of images on a single click to generate a probabilistic report in real-time.

ABSTRACT

Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is started from Wuhan (City in China), and is rapidly spreading among people living in other countries. Today, around 215 countries are affected by COVID-19 disease. WHO announced approximately number of cases 11,274,600 worldwide. Due to rapidly rising cases daily in the hospitals, there are a limited number of resources available to control COVID-19 disease. Therefore, it is essential to develop an accurate diagnosis of COVID-19 disease. Early diagnosis of COVID-19 patients is important for preventing the disease from spreading to others. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning based approach that can differentiate COVID- 19 disease patients from viral pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia, and healthy (normal) cases. In this approach, deep transfer learning is adopted. We used binary and multi-class dataset which is categorized in four types for experimentation: (i) Collection of 728 X-ray images including 224 images with confirmed COVID-19 disease and 504 normal condition images (ii) Collection of 1428 X-ray images including 224 images with confirmed COVID-19 disease, 700 images with confirmed common bacterial pneumonia, and 504 normal condition images. (iii) Collections of 1442 X- ray images including 224 images with confirmed COVID-19 disease, 714 images with confirmed bacterial and viral pneumonia, and 504 images of normal conditions (iv) Collections of 5232 X- ray images including 2358 images with confirmed bacterial and 1345 with viral pneumonia, and 1346 images of normal conditions. In this paper, we have used nine convolutional neural network based architecture (AlexNet, GoogleNet, ResNet-50, Se-ResNet-50, DenseNet121, Inception V4, Inception ResNet V2, ResNeXt-50, and Se-ResNeXt-50). Experimental results indicate that the pre trained model Se-ResNeXt-50 achieves the highest classification accuracy of 99.32% for binary class and 97.55% for multi-class among all pre-trained models.
